Visions of the Future and the Power in Prayer (Daniel 9)

This was part of a series on the prophetic visions in the last half of the book of Daniel. It contrasts a biblical view of prayer, as seen in the life of Daniel, with cultural views of what prayer is all about. When we approach God in prayer the way Daniel did, we become people who can receive his awesome power. Direct download

Heroes of Faith

This was a talk I gave at Woodbridge in our series "Heavenly Heroes," based on the Old Testament heroes of faith in Hebrews 11:1-7. I talk about what faith is—the kind of faith that pleases God—and what it looks like in our lives. In contrast, our culture views faith as a private, emotional belief, and not the active trust in a loving Father that characterizes the lives of the men and women we read about in Hebrews 11. The Kingdom: Our Place in His Plan

Sermon delivered at Woodbridge Community Church, July 9, 2017. This was the closing talk in our series on the parables of Jesus, and it covers the parables immediately following the parable of the sower (Matt 13:24-44). It contrasts our current cultural perspective that we are at the center of the universe (and the consequences of living out that perspective) with Jesus' depiction of God's kingdom, and our place in it. How Do We Know Christianity is True?

This was the third talk in a series called "How Do You Know?" where we talk about the reasons why we have faith in Christ. A better title for this one might have been, "Why does Christianity make sense?" I wasn't sure about bringing these kinds of talks into Sunday morning, but afterward I realized that hearing everything explained this way, in common-sense terms, was powerful for people. Evading Jagged Rocks

This talk was given in February 2017 in our series "Shipwrecked," based on 1 Tim. 1:19 where Paul writes about those who experience shipwreck in their faith. This installment in the series is about the jagged rocks which we crash on, which can keep us from the abundant life that the Lord has for us. It's based on the Parable of the Sower in Luke 8. You'll notice a little overlap between this and the talk I just gave on Number 5-8... Clearly this is a topic that has been on my heart. Direct download

His Name Upon Us

This is a talk on Numbers chapters 5-8 that I gave to about 300 women at a Bible study in Newport Beach. They are in a year-long study of the period between Israel's exodus from Egypt and reaching the promised land. When I was assigned this passage (most of which I only refer to, as it's too long to read) I was concerned about how Israel's purity laws and discussion of Nazarite vows and people consecrated to tabernacle service would translate into something practical, but it turned out to be a powerful study with insights for personal holiness and a life filled with God's blessings. Shut Your Mouth! God’s Wisdom and Our Words

This was my second opportunity to teach in our series on the Wisdom Literature, "Respect the Beard." This talk is about God's wisdom on how we use our words. We can speak harshly and damage our own lives as well as the lives of others, or we can speak with grace and love, and bring healing. Matt 12:35-37, 1 Pet 3:9-12, Matt 12:35-37, James 1:26, Prov. 21:23, 29:20, James 1:19-20, 12:22, 26:26, Ps 34:12-13, Prov. 15:4, 17:20, James 3:5-6, Eph. 4:29,12:35, James 3:9-11, 12:18, 16:24, 18:21 Direct download

The Children's Prayer

This is a message I gave Sunday morning, August 7, 2016, at Woodbridge Community Church. This is the fourth talk in a series on prayer, and I was asked to speak on the Lord's Prayer in Matthew 6. Jesus offers this prayer to help us understand that we need only simple words and the trust of a child to come to our heavenly Father, who loves us more than we can imagine. Direct download

The Answer to All My Questions

I spoke on February 10, 2016 to a group of 300 women who are currently in a year-long study of Romans. This talk is on Romans 8:31-39, and it focuses on our questions about our suffering and pain, and where God stands in the middle of it. We are drawn toward victory as we understand that nothing, including hardship, loss, and disappointment, can separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ. Direct download

The Holy Ghost and the Journey of Life

I gave this message at Woodbridge Community Church on Sunday, November 15, 2015 (my message follows Frank's introduction), and it's about what it means to walk by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit leads us through the journey of life, and as we keep in step with him, we experience his transforming power, peace, joy, and a lifestyle of love and self-control. Direct download

The Father's Unfailing, Transforming Love

Message for Father's Day at Woodbridge Community Church, June 21, 2015. In Luke 15, Jesus tells three parables to explain to the religious elite why he is invested in the lives of sinners and outcasts. In vv. 11-31, he chooses a story about a father and two sons to illustrate how the Heavenly Father regards sinners who turn away from their failure. The model of God’s fatherhood in this parable is an inspiration and challenge to fathers who seek to offer their children the same love that God offers to all of us. Direct download

Discipleship: Philippians 3:12-14

This is a talk I gave as part of the Biola Faculty Chapel Series on November 18, 1998. I was privileged and blessed to have the chance to speak to the student body and see so many students I had taught over the previous four years. I had been teaching at Biola for close to eight years at this point. This talk was at the core of what I brought to college students in my classes over the course of my time there. Direct download
